pil performative instruments lab

PIL Lab is specialized in developing media performance tools, interfaces and performative installations.

Methodology used in Lab is  based on altering between three stages of creative process:

— Researching and collecting all available and relevant material from Academic to DIY (do it yourself) resources and examples for a personal and lab reference library. Researching the compositional possibilities of the instrument, different conceptual, esthetic and composition method approaches.

— Documentation of the instruments developed by individual student or student groups are cataloged for further references and promotional purposes for the department.

— Development from sketching trough prototyping to realization. The choices of the technique and media, software and/or hardware, electric, electronic, mechanic or a hybrid, constructed or hacked…. are all project dependent.

Al participants are encouraged to experiment hands on with real materials and not just discussing ideas.

Developing (live)composition methods. Weekly meetings and feedback sessions within a group on every stage of development. Working towards public presentation outside of the institute and support for activities organized by the department and the other running Labs.

Exploration* :  Exploitation**  Learning how to grow material trough exploring al the dimensions of an audiovisual instrument. Coming up with new techniques and strategies for a media performer and creating individual or smaller group compositions and performative installations. In this stage connections with other Labs of the department are there as an exploratory option. RecPlay,  for example, as playing in a group improvisation situation.

All three stages are strongly connected, equal and ongoing, and require the same attention and time. Output of every stage will be well documented for reference and future use.

* Exploration is meant as the action of traveling in or trough an unfamiliar area in order to learn about it.

** Exploitation is meant as the action of making use and benefiting from resources.
